Tofu!!!!

Yes I said Tofu!!! And no it's not nasty!!!!!!

Oh, wow, were do I start...Ok, I've probably been were most of you have been, with a big wet, rectangular block of white, spongey-looking tofu.

I hated it the first time I attempted to "cook" it but now I can't keep it in my fridge.

Yes, it was sooo bland and yes it is tasteless

Where most of us go wrong is it's appearance, but hey if you have every eaten a burger you know that it first it was a cute cow named Bossy. Then Bossy was slaughtered and chopped up into big hunks. Later, her meat was pushed through a meat grinder before being patted into a patty. (Yes, I went there but there isn't a thing wrong with meat if meat is your thing.)

Or on the flip side, before you ate that shiny, red apple it was a beautiful green bud on a tree that bloosomed to a beautiful flower and finally into a sweet, juicy apple.

Well tofu is just soy beans that have blended with water. The bean fragments were discarded leaving the soy "milk" which was then heated for sterilization, and coagulated with something "acidic" to form a curd (much like cheese is the seperation of curds and whey). Then all the water is pressed out and the curds are formed into a rectangular shape.

Now that you have this block of tofu what do you do?

Well the simplest way to cook it is to fry it. Either shallow fry it like you would chicken but this only using enough oil for sauteeing (1-2 Tbsp or for some even less). Now frying it this way it will taste like an omelete. My omnivore friends first reaction to the taste cooked or raw is "it taste like an egg". Now that's plain tofu without any seasoning.

Scrambling tofu in a 1 tsp of oil combined with onion powder, garlic powder, scallions, and 1 tsp spoon of plain curry powder and maybe some mushrooms, will give youa western style scrambler with more protein than eggs and ZERO cholesterol.

With poultry seasoning and a little cornmeal but mainly flour, baked or deep fried it taste similiar to a chicken nugget.

With seasoning and batter (like cornmeal mix and seaweed powder), it tastes like fish sticks or fried fish-filet

The flavors of tofu dishes are innumuerable because tofu tastes like whatever you cook it with...Now if you're looking to taste meat you're not going to taste it, but with the right amount of seasonings you don't miss the taste of meat and still have a delicious filling meal.

It's not for meat lovers who crave the meaty taste unless it's cooked with meat or used in baking.

It's a meat substitute for source of protein and a little for taste...I promise you...you'll like it--you just have to know how to cook/season it.
